Evening Prayer
Welcome to Westminster Abbey. Daily prayer has been offered in this place for over a thousand years, and your participation in today's service is warmly welcomed.
The service always includes one or more psalms. These ancient prayers, taken from the Old Testament, reflect the full range of human emotions and experiences; from the depths of anger, resentment, and abandonment to the heights of ecstatic joy and praise. They were used by Jesus, and have always been at the heart of the Church's daily prayer.
The canticles Magnificat (Luke 1: 46–55) and Nunc dimittis (Luke 2: 29–32) reflect two responses to the Incarnation (God becoming fully human in Jesus Christ). Both speak of the fulfilment of God's promises, not just to 'Abraham and his seed', but also 'to be a light to lighten the Gentiles' (all nations). With their themes of fulfilment and completion, these texts have been given central place for many centuries in the Church's prayers for the evening and at the end of the day.
Please join in saying the words printed in bold type.
The church is served by a hearing loop. Users should turn their hearing aid to the setting marked T.
Photography, filming, and sound recording are not allowed in the Abbey during services. Please ensure that mobile telephones and other electronic devices are silent.
Following the service a collection will be taken; the money from today's services will be divided equally between Tariro—Hope for Youth in Zimbabwe International and the work of the Abbey. Tariro helps young people in Zimbabwe to learn, develop, and grow until they can support themselves.
Order of Service
All stand as the clergy enter
The officiant says a sentence of Scripture
All remain standing as the officiant introduces the Confession
Beloved, we are come together in the presence of Almighty God and of the whole company of heaven to offer unto him through our Lord Jesus Christ our worship and praise and thanksgiving; to make confession of our sins; to pray, as well for others as for ourselves, that we may know more truly the greatness of God's love and show forth in our lives the fruits of his grace; and to ask on behalf of all people such things as their well-being doth require. Wherefore let us sit or kneel and keep silence, and remember God's presence with us now.
All kneel or sit to say together
O God, our Father,
we have sinned against thee
in thought, word, and deed;
we have not loved thee with all our heart;
we have not loved our neighbour as ourselves.
Have mercy upon us, we beseech thee;
cleanse us from our sins;
and help us to overcome our faults;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
The officiant gives the Absolution
May the almighty and merciful Lord grant unto you pardon and remission of all your sins, time for amendment of life, and the grace and comfort of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
All stand to say the Responses
and to the Holy Ghost;
world without end. Amen.
All sit to say Psalms 112, 113, and 114
Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord :
he hath great delight in his commandments.
His seed shall be mighty upon earth :
the generation of the faithful shall be blessed.
Riches and plenteousness shall be in his house :
and his righteousness endureth for ever.
Unto the godly there ariseth up light in the darkness :
he is merciful, loving, and righteous.
A good man is merciful, and lendeth :
and will guide his words with discretion.
For he shall never be moved :
and the righteous shall be had in everlasting remembrance.
He will not be afraid of any evil tidings :
for his heart standeth fast, and believeth in the Lord.
His heart is established, and will not shrink :
until he see his desire upon his enemies.
He hath dispersed abroad, and given to the poor :
and his righteousness remaineth for ever; his horn shall be exalted with honour.
The ungodly shall see it, and it shall grieve him :
he shall gnash with his teeth, and consume away; the desire of the ungodly shall perish.
and to the Holy Ghost;
world without end. Amen.
O praise the name of the Lord.
Blessed be the name of the Lord :
from this time forth for evermore.
The Lord's name is praised :
from the rising up of the sun unto the going down of the same.
The Lord is high above all heathen :
and his glory above the heavens.
Who is like unto the Lord our God, that hath his dwelling so high :
and yet humbleth himself to behold the things that are in heaven and earth?
He taketh up the simple out of the dust :
and lifteth the poor out of the mire;
that he may set him with the princes :
even with the princes of his people.
He maketh the barren woman to keep house :
and to be a joyful mother of children.
and to the Holy Ghost;
world without end. Amen.
and the house of Jacob from among the strange people,
Judah was his sanctuary :
and Israel his dominion.
The sea saw that, and fled :
Jordan was driven back.
The mountains skipped like rams :
and the little hills like young sheep.
What aileth thee, O thou sea, that thou fleddest :
and thou Jordan, that thou wast driven back?
Ye mountains, that ye skipped like rams :
and ye little hills, like young sheep?
Tremble, thou earth, at the presence of the Lord :
at the presence of the God of Jacob;
who turned the hard rock into a standing water :
and the flint-stone into a springing well.
and to the Holy Ghost;
world without end. Amen.
All remain seated for the first Lesson, Genesis 11: 1–9
The whole earth had one language and the same words. And as they migrated from the east, they came upon a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. And they said to one another, 'Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.' And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. Then they said, 'Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.' The Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which mortals had built. And the Lord said, 'Look, they are one people, and they have all one language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do; nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. Come, let us go down, and confuse their language there, so that they will not understand one another's speech.' So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. Therefore it was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.
Here ends the first lesson.
All stand to say Magnificat
the lowliness of his hand-maiden.
all generations shall call me blessed;
and to the Holy Ghost;
world without end. Amen.
All sit for the second Lesson, Matthew 24: 15–28
Jesus said, 'When you see the desolating sacrilege standing in the holy place, as was spoken of by the prophet Daniel (let the reader understand), then those in Judea must flee to the mountains; someone on the housetop must not go down to take what is in the house; someone in the field must not turn back to get a coat. Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing infants in those days! Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a sabbath. For at that time there will be great suffering, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be. And if those days had not been cut short, no one would be saved; but for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short. Then if anyone says to you, "Look! Here is the Messiah!" or "There he is!"—do not believe it. For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and produce great signs and omens, to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. Take note, I have told you beforehand. So, if they say to you, "Look! He is in the wilderness", do not go out. If they say, "Look! He is in the inner rooms", do not believe it. For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.'
Here ends the second lesson.
All stand to say Nunc dimittis
and to the Holy Ghost;
world without end. Amen.
All face east to say together the Apostles' Creed
I believe in God the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth:
and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried.
He descended into hell;
the third day he rose again from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost;
the holy catholic Church;
the communion of saints;
the forgiveness of sins;
the resurrection of the body;
and the life everlasting.
Amen.
Let us pray.
All kneel or sit for the Lesser Litany; the Lord's Prayer and the Responses
Our Father, which art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done,
in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive them that trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.
but only thou, O God.
The officiant says the Collects; of the day, of Lent, for peace, and for aid against all perils
Almighty and everlasting God, who hatest nothing that thou hast made, and dost forgive the sins of all them that are penitent; create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we worthily lamenting our sins, and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of thee, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels and all just works do proceed: Give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that both our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee we being defended from the fear of our enemies may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.
Lighten our darkness we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.
The officiant says the Prayers; for the Royal Family, and for the Members of the Order of the Bath
Almighty God, the fountain of all goodness, we humbly beseech thee to bless our most gracious Sovereign Lord King Charles, Queen Camilla, William Prince of Wales, the Princess of Wales, and all the Royal Family: endue them with thy Holy Spirit; enrich them with thy heavenly grace; prosper them with all happiness; and bring them to thine everlasting kingdom, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
God save our Gracious Sovereign, and all the Members of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath living and departed. Amen.
All remain kneeling or seated for the Intercessions, at the end of which all say
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
and the love of God,
and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit,
be with us all evermore.
Amen.
All stand as the clergy depart
